Mid-October BEST of Boomer Blog Carnival!

by midlifecrisisqueen on October 7, 2013

Golden Aspens mediumAfter record-setting rainfall in mid-September (over 7 inches!), we are having a fantastically beautiful fall here in northern Colorado.  The aspens are just starting to turn in Fort Collins. LOVELY!

If you happen to be into weather, don’t miss out on the opportunity to contribute to CoCoRahs daily.  I was one of their first members back in 1998, after a deadly flood struck Fort Collins.  CoCoRahs is a national program where you gather and send them your precipitation data daily to help out the weather service, etc.

But enough about the weather.  You came here to see what’s happening on the top boomer blogs this week…  Here you go:

smart phoneLast week Tom at Sightings over Sixty joined the approximately 30% of Baby Boomers who use a smartphone. Here he confesses: A Dummy Gets a Smartphone.  It’s unclear whether he will actually be able to use it, but at least he HAS one now!

This week on Modern Senior, Amy takes a look at a recently released documentary call Granny’s Got Game, a film that looks at gender discrimination and the role of sports while also telling the individual stories of six women basketball players.  Be sure to stop by to learn more including how YOU can host a screening in your own community.

jack-o-lanternNon-medical home care allows many older adults customized one-on-one care at home. Karen at The Generation Above Me had the opportunity to learn more about Home Instead Senior Care through conversations with franchise owners in Wichita, Kansas.

On The Survive and Thrive Boomer Guide, Rita R. Robison, consumer journalist, writes about which cities in America are the fittest for baby boomers. Among the top 10 are San Jose, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Denver, and Boston.

ThanksgivukkahSoBabyBoomer rounds out the list by informing us about a rare convergence of the calendar this year.  Thanksgiving and the first day of Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish festival of lights that typically commences close to Christmas, falls on the same date in 2013: Nov. 28th.  Thanksgivukkah has become a bold platform of expression for this once in a lifetime holiday mashup

And finally, here’s how our lovely government shutdown is handicapping those who need government assistance NOW!
