What does this mean?

by midlifecrisisqueen on August 9, 2013

Since viewing this short piece on the ABC News in mid-May about the thousands of Americans who have chosen to move to Cuenca Ecuador for retirement, Mike and I have been researching this possibility non-stop.

Next I talked to everyone I met in Fort Collins about the idea, which led to meeting a few people locally who have recently spent time in Ecuador.  They were fun to talk to and also quite positive in their impressions of life there.

Then Mike and I researched in great detail, comparing the climate, elevation, demographics, natural hazards, culture, and prices.  In the meantime we met with a friend of a friend who is just completing her final paper work to move to Cuenca.

As of yesterday this woman asked me if I would like to accompany her down to Ecuador when she moves there next month.  She would like my help and in return she would pay my way…  Say what?  How’s that for a case of what you focus on grows?

I am sitting here in wonder at how one thing just keeps leading to another in quick succession.  Is this all just so many coincidences?  I mean, what are the chances that all of this would come together so quickly?

Exciting! You will want to read South of Normal, by my friend, Norm Schriever. He lived in Costa Rica, not Ecuador, but some of his cultural observations may be relevant. Plus it’s a hilarious look at ex pat life.

Hi Laura Lee:
I just found your website and read this post. I think many of us who are in midlife are thinking about where to live and how to make the most of our remaining lives. I like to call this process “right-sizing” and believe we can start at any age. Right-sizing is focusing in on what’s most important and will bring the greatest happiness, purpose and piece of mind. I know lots of people who are moving to other countries as one way to right-size, but I also know that it’s possible to do the same here in our own country once we identify what it is we hope to experience. Check out this website for anyone who’s interested in “right-sizing” here in the US! I look forward to following your blog post and seeing if Ecuador turns out to be “right” for you!

I understand what you are saying, but from where I stand the cost of everything in the U.S. is driving thousands out, especially health care, and I see no reason why they will not continue to be astronomical compared to every other country in the world.
Health expenditures are presently 20% of GDP now in the US, second highest in the WORLD! Most can only afford to live here as long as their health is good…. LLC
