Just watched the 2006 film “The Holiday” yesterday for the third or fourth time. This is quickly becoming an annual tradition for me…
This time I paid special attention to the intricate construction of the story and the writing, in this complex mix of coincidence and synchronicity. So many small details had to coalesce at the right time for this story to work, and I think the writing is EXCELLENT!
I find myself and experiences from my own life in so many of the scenes in this movie, from the character played by Kate Winslet, who seems to be suffering from a terminal case of “ambivalent boyfriend syndrome” to Cameron Diaz, who feels stuck in having no feelings of caring or love at all.
Then there’s Jack Black who SHINES in this film like never before, and Jude Law who plays the most adorable male character ever seen in film! Not to mention the elderly movie writer played by Eli Wallach. What a sweetheart!
Although this is not officially a Christmas movie, it does happen around Christmas, and seems to spread a fair amount of positive holiday cheer.
For me, this is a great way to enjoy the holidays, much like the brilliant, “A Christmas Story” and, of course, the Polar Express!
