The End is Near!
Do you ever wonder about when the world will end? Nearly 15 percent of people worldwide believe the world will end during their lifetime, and 10 percent believe the Mayan calendar’s prediction for this month, according to a new poll. Why do so many of us focus on this possibility?
I just read an interesting thought piece from the BBC on this apparent human obsession with end game scenarios. Did you know Americans are much more focused on the end of the world than most other countries?
A Reuters poll earlier this year found that one in four Americans, and one in seven worldwide believe the world will end during their lifetime. Only six percent of French residents believe in an impending Armageddon in their lifetime, compared to twenty-two percent in Turkey. Seven percent in Belgium and eight percent in Great Britain fear the end of the world (as we know it…) during their lifetime. Lots of people don’t just think the world revolves around them, they think it may also end around them.
I, on the other hand, rarely gave the end of the world much thought until I met Mike, my new (and improved!) husband. He LOVES disaster movies! Documentaries about catastrophic volcanoes in Yellowstone, or fictional depictions of end of earth scenarios get him going. I find this type of focus kind of creepy. I keep telling him, “Whatever you focus on grows!”
I can see no reason to think about Armageddon much. When it’s over, it’s over! Until then, what can I do that makes me feel useful and good about myself? That’s my perspective on the future.
I was asked to write a review for a book this past year on channeling information from somewhere or other, about the end of the Mayan calendar, which I guess falls sometime next week now. My review was not well-received because all I could think of to say was, this book will probably sell well until around December 21st. After that, not so much…
