The latest crisis at my house….

by midlifecrisisqueen on September 21, 2012

Dealing with the untimely death of my refrigerator this week, got me pretty stressed!  I had no idea how attached I am to cold food and drink!

Here’s the scoop: Because we qualified for assistance with our heating bills last winter, we also received a full energy audit of our house for free.  That happened on Tuesday morning.  In the process they unplugged our frig.  As it turns out, that killed it dead.  But we didn’t notice until Wednesday morning.  This led to a few quick trips to my friend’s house with the frozen foods, ice for our numerous iceboxes, etc.

The good news came Wednesday morning: the government would pay for a new frig for us because they felt responsible for its failure.  The bad news?  It might take them ten days to get us one!

Now you sit and imagine having NO REFRIGERATOR for ten days… I simply couldn’t fathom it!  This led to many other thoughts about exactly how dependent I am on modern appliances and electricity, which made me feel even more uncomfortable.  If losing my frig freaked me out this much, what would I do if we lost all electricity like on that TV show “Revolution”?

By Wednesday afternoon I was a wreck, so I started calling everyone until some nice man finally reassured me that our new frig would get here today.  As luck would have it, we got it this AM, it’s the same one we had already picked out for ourselves, and all’s right with my world…  except for that part of me who fears losing all of the marvelous luxuries we all take for granted everyday.  I just realized exactly how dependent I am on “the grid.”  YIKES!!!

BTW, this was super stressful and gave me the perfect opportunity to see how it effected my eating habits!  I go for the starches and sweets when faced with that scary, stressed out, out of control feeling!

You said it, we’re hyper dependent on all things luxury. I have a panic when our wireless router went out. Thank goodness for my laptop and Starbucks.
