The passion of coaching clients to their personal best

by midlifecrisisqueen on March 1, 2010

As the flame is extinguished in Vancouver and the athletes all return home, I am left wondering what did I learn from witnessing so much passion in action?

It’s one thing to have a dream, like winning a gold medal at the Olympics, but it’s quite another to follow through to the end, and attain the results you desire.

Sometimes the difference between dreaming and succeeding is simply finding the right coach to help you feed your dream, and make certain you will bring it to fruition.

First you need to find the right dream to pursue, or adjust it properly.  Whenever you cannot decide on something, it is because you do not yet have enough information to make an informed decision.  Go read this post when you’re starting to narrow down the right career dream for yourself.

Once you have a strong grasp on your passion or best-case scenario dream, what’s next?  You can start by seeking out the best coach you can find to make certain that you WILL reach your goal.  The life change coaching I offer is quite similar to that of an athletic coach.  First I assist my clients as they choose their most desired life change, one they feel certain they can absolutely commit to.

I ask them questions like:

  • Are you willing to risk it all, put it all out there, and still fail?
  • How much are you willing to commit?
  • How do you define success or failure?
  • What if the business you start fails, but you learn enough about yourself that you become completely clear about what you want to try next?

Most of us fear failure too much to make any changes in our lives.  In fact, most of us assume that any change will be ultimately disappointing when in fact the opposite is true.  If we never risk any major changes, we will have no opportunity to discover our deepest interests and passions.  Things will probably stay the same until we die.

Midlife crises like divorce, job loss, career change are all unique points in your life when do-overs are in order.  They may even be signs that give you permission to dream again about a more interesting and exciting future for yourself.  If you can find the courage inside to step outside of your safety zone (or your box!) and dream again, miracles can happen!

Yes, there will be obstacles – physical, emotional and financial, but if you do find a dream worth pursuing, you need to commit to it for the long haul.  Consider how long most of those Olympic athletes had been pursuing their dreams…most since childhood.  They believed in themselves strongly enough to set a goal, acquired the necessary support system to improve their skills over the years, and some reached their ultimate pinnacle of success last week.  But none of them would have succeeded without proper coaching.

A coach’s job is to talk their clients into believing in themselves and their dreams, keeping their clients absolutely focused on the goal at hand.  I can help you believe that your goal is possible, attainable and even inevitable.  I believe you can achieve everything you ever wanted in life, if you want it enough!

What do you dream about now, and how are you going to get there?
