emulate: to try to equal or excel; to imitate with an effort to equal or surpass.
When we stop and think about who we want to be next. When we KNOW it’s time for a job or career change, but don’t know what to consider next in our lives. We may start looking around for a method to narrow it down. How can we be certain that we are pursuing the right passion or dream BEFORE we commit wholeheartedly to its completion?
I learned a long time ago that if I cannot find certainty in my own decision making process, it is because I need more information to make an informed decision. 50 Interviews is a great way to find certainty! Let me give you an example from my own life.
I have done quite a bit of public speaking first as an academic librarian/professor and more recently as the Midlife Crisis Queen. But I wanted to know more about the life of a professional speaker. So when my friend Brian Schwartz of 50 Interviews asked me to share in his experience of interviewing some of the top speakers in America, and then compiling their advice into a book, I signed on.
I wanted to learn more and this seemed like a fantastic opportunity to access the real life experiences and knowledge of some of the best, and most highly-paid speakers in the business. Talk about a steep learning curve! Once you start talking to the best in the business you learn so much, so fast! It’s like a fire hose of knowledge coming at you!
What I received out of this experience was access for an hour or two to some of the top speakers, direct mentoring from them, and the publication of an invaluable book packed full of inside information on getting your speaking career off the ground, attracting new customers, and instruction in how to begin thinking like a successful speaking entrepreneur. Not a bad investment of my time and energy!
I also experienced personally what a great career change concept 50 Interviews can be for those at a career crossroads. Brian has now guided and mentored a number of older adults through the process of gaining access to their heroes for career advice, mentoring, and a publication by them on the subject.
Here in Fort Collins, we will be celebrating the completion of seven 50 Interviews books the end of March! You are all invited to come celebrate with us at Everyday Joe’s in downtown Fort Collins the evening of March 31st! He’s adding new authors from all over the country everyday! Sign up with Brian when you’re ready to go have a talk with your personal heroes, and learn about their lives.
How else will you know enough to take the leap of faith into your new career, without first talking to those who do it successfully?
My advice to you: Spend the time to truly understand what you’re getting into. Look before you leap! Then you will be able to embrace your new career wholeheartedly when you finally risk it all to become the person you are inside!
