No kidding! I just went to see the new film “It’s complicated.” Didn’t like it much at first, but I do have quite a bit of personal bias when it comes to this topic.
When I left my husband in 2001, I was so finished with that relationship! And even if I wasn’t, every time I spent time around my “wasband, ” the thought of ever having sex with him actually made me nauseous!
Still and all, I am certain there are couples who sleep together years after the divorce. That’s what this movie is about. My other bias is how unattractive I find Alec Baldwin, but that’s another story entirely.
As I began to watch this movie, I was going along thinking I found the whole story silly and mostly unbelievable, until the Steve Martin character was introduced into the plot. I really liked the guy he portrayed. By far my favorite part of the movie is when Meryl Streep and Steve Martin get very high at her kids’ party. TRULY HILARIOUS!!!
I think it’s GREAT to see more movies portraying the interesting and funny complications of being in midlife. We all know how confusing it can be! Good to see the movies are finally growing up with films like “Up in the Air” and this one. I applaud the makers of this film for choosing actors that are actually in their 50s (Meryl Streep just turned 60!), not overdoing it with the make-up, and showing what a midlife paunch (Alec Baldwin!) really looks like! I think they may be bringing older Americans back to the movies.
This is a light, fun romp which includes some truths about how we see ourselves as we age, and then encourages us to laugh at the silliness of it all. I laughed out loud when Meryl Streep caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror, and responded with, “Is that REALLY what I look like?”
Loved this insightful comment from another movie reviewer:
“I enjoyed the spectacle of middle-aged people making spectacles of themselves.” -Philadelphia Inquirer
