I just had an interview with Tom Mustin an anchor at the CBS affilate television station in Denver this morning. He found my take on midlife transformation interesting, so he invited me down to Denver to discuss the needs of those going through tough times. I explained how this blog and my book are my way of “paying it forward.”
I told him of my many struggles after my own divorce and job loss, and how much extra encouragement and support would have meant to me from those going through similar circumstances. So when things improved in my life, I decided to start this blog to throw a lifeline to others suffering through midlife hell. I just figured I would have really enjoyed this type of virtual connectedness when I was going through similar difficulties. Knowing that you’re not alone in your struggles has to help.
And as it turns out, I’ve learned in my research that at least one third of Americans experience what they would identify as a “midlife crisis” broadly defined as “a stressful or turbulent psychological transition that occurs most often in the late forties and early fifties.” (from The Breaking Point by Sue Shellenbarger) And we also know that the 40’s are the most likely time worldwide for depression to rear it’s ugly head.
I was surprised how easy it was to talk about my own experiences, my blog and my book on camera. I guess that is the sign of a good interviewer. I forgot about the camera a number of times. I’ll let you know when it airs next week. It will be available live at their website. I’ll let you know when.
