Silly me, I thought a nice, relaxing week by the pool was just what we needed to get over our mid-winter slump. So I called up “Worry-free Travel” and got a great deal on a charter flight to Cancun to stay at the “all-inclusive” Barcelo Maya Colonial Beach Resort.
My first indication that this trip would not be “worry-free” was when the staph infection on my toes turned out to be antibiotic resistant. It just kept coming after weeks of heavy doses of Cephalexin. OK, so I can’t get in the pool or swim in the ocean. MAJOR BUMMER, but at least it’s a beautiful resort with great food and other activities.
Then the food poisoning started rearing it’s ugly head Tuesday night. I was extremely ill for a little over 24 hours and then Mike got sick after that…he’s still barely able to function. Hummm, there’s something about projectile vomiting and diarrhea that does not strike me as “worry-free.”
Here’s your warning: Don’t eat the food even at those places where you see lots of other Americans eating it and figure it’s OK! In fact, we have decided against Mexico in general for future vacations. I had never gotten sick there before, but this was truly memorable!

Hey, I just realized why this resort is called the “colonial.” Because you can get as sick as the original colonists did!
Got horribly sick in Mexico, so sick I didn’t know how I was going to get home. I’ve also made a decision Not to go back, be it, a relatively easy and cheap vacation spot. Too yucky to consider going again.
