It’s always fun to talk to friends who met their spouses through the internet. We had dinner the other night with a couple that had great stories of their first meeting.
First of all, when they decided to finally meet after emailing for quite awhile, they miscommunicated and ended up at two different Starbucks that happened to be across the street from each other!
Luckily one of them realized the mistake and called immediately afterwards to apologize and set up another meeting.
Their relationship progressed quite quickly and they decided to marry just months after they met. When the topic of their proposal came up, my friend became all teary eyed and said, “He did it up big, he got down on his knee and everything!”
Her husband then chimed in, in perfect midlife humor, “My GOOD knee!” We all laughed. And yet there is something quite wonderful about the options the internet offers to us older singles these days.
I got to thinking about what used to happen to older singles in our culture. Historically, if we found ourselves single at anywhere past 35 or 40 years of age, the chances of our meeting an appropriate new partner were slim. If we lived in a small town, we probably would have had to move somewhere else to find love.
I know for certain that I never would have met my new husband if it weren’t for Match.com, and that would have been a great tragedy! We only lived ten miles apart, but I can’t imagine how we would have met.
The internet is a great tool, when it works. Older couples are getting together today in an amazing way. And the best part is when we are older, we have so much more experience in the ways of the world. We know ourselves a whole lot better than when you were 20 or 30, and know for certain when we’ve met someone special.
As we age, if we work at it, we begin to finally trust our feelings or intuition. We’ve met so many people in our lives, and so we know when someone very special walks into it. If we believe in ourselves and believe that something fabulous really can happen, we are open to it.
My life experience is living proof that if we still believe in magic, anything is possible!
