I wonder how many of you remember the TV show Ally McBeal. For some reason I loved that show! It was so off-the-wall, especially when they had Tracy Ullman come in to play Ally’s psychotherapist! Tracy encouraged Ally to choose a theme song for difficult times in her life. I never forgot that. I always have a theme song for the transition I’m trying to make happen.
When I decided to change careers, the song “Suddenly I see” by KT Tunstall was a total inspiration for me. ”Suddenly I see, this is what I want to be… Suddenly I see, why the hell it means so much to me!” I listen to this song at least once a day, more when I’m feeling discouraged, and it always reminds me that my dream is better than all the little reasons why I should just give up.
One of the biggest challenges of any major life transition is trusting in your inner wisdom and your power to change. All change is a slow process which makes us feel uncomfortable at times. Try to embrace the risk-taker in yourself. Give yourself permission to experiment and explore. It’s normal to run into deadends. Just don’t let it stop you!
Remember to ask for help. You are not in this alone, so network! Enlist the help of friends, family and colleagues to keep you focused on what you hope to achieve.
Most importantly, don’t give in to the biggest fear of all, that you are a loser or failure. This belief can only cause you to spiral downward into depression.
